A suite of user-friendly tools helps keep your drive up to date, monitor drive health and speed, and even boost performance. Samsung does say that its latest 9x-layer flash operates at much faster speeds than its 64-layer predecessor and features a low 1.2V I/O rating. The new flash also supports the Toggle 4.0 interface, operates at 1.4GT/s, and comes with a 256Gb die density for the 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB 970 EVO Plus models. A 2TB model will come later, bringing with it a 512Gb die. The new 9x-layer V-NAND, combined with the 970 EVO Plus's firmware optimizations, improves random write performance significantly and gives the SSD a slight boost in random read performance, too. Sequential write speeds also increased by 800MB/s. Samsung’s 970 EVO Plus can dish out up to 3.5GB/s of sequential read performance and up to a staggering 3.3GB/s write. It also delivers up to 620,000/560,000 random read/write IOPS. SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS FEATURES Always evolving SSD The ultimate in performance, upgraded. Faster than the 970 EVO, the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 250GB M.2 NVME SSD is powered by the latest V-NAND technology and firmware optimization. It maximizes the potential of NVMe bandwidth for unbeatable computing. In capacities up to 2TB, with reliability of up to 1,200 TBW. The Samsung Magician software will help you keep an eye on your drive. A suite of user-friendly tools helps keep your drive up to date, monitor drive health and speed, and even boost performance. SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS REVIEW The second big difference is the price. When we first tested the 970 Evo, a 500GB model was 32p per gigabyte and the 1TB model 30.1p. This has dropped over time, but the 970 Evo Plus is still priced a lot more aggressively, with the 500GB model (the one we’re testing) currently costing 19p per gigabyte. There’s also a 1TB model at 18.9p and a 2TB model at 19.9p, along with a 250GB model that bucks the trend somewhat by working out at a less attractive 26p per gigabyte. Granted, this still doesn’t put the 970 Evo Plus among the likes of the XPG SX8200 Pro or the Kingston A2000 in terms of value; instead, it’s almost equal on pricing with the WD Black SN750, and across all four capacities, too. Still, at least it’s an agreeable step away from the original 970 Evo’s undeserved costliness. It’s also worth remembering that the 970 Evo Plus isn’t exactly aiming for the bargain bucket. This is a performance SSD for heavy PC users, and for all the penny-pinching arguments against it, Samsung’s latest M.2 drive is the speed demon that the 970 Evo should have been. This is clear even in our most easygoing benchmarks, the Crystal Disk Mark sequential test: the 970 Evo Plus managed a searing 3,568MB/s read speed and, importantly, a write speed of 3,212MB/s. That’s nearly 700MB/s faster than the 970 Evo, as well as 300MB/s quicker than the XPG SX8200 Pro.
